From the article

The real Andy Warhol? By Nigel Andrews

AW: Sex is the ultimate agreement by people to sink differences in a common cause! It’s also the most beautiful form of consumerism and materialism. Two people become consumer objects to each other, and the consumer instinct never lies. Passion, in its will-erasing irrationality, is the best form of honesty. In sex, to paraphrase Jean Renoir, everyone has his unreason.

NA: But the director is not participating, merely observing. He surely becomes a voyeur?

AW: Voyeurism is a director’s job description. It’s an artist’s too. Ingres and Renoir painted their nudes, Picasso his satyrs, Francis Bacon his wrestling lovers. If the critique is that the artist gets an illicit joy or thrill from such work, the only unexamined word there is “illicit”. Tell me of a period in art when Eros was not a force in human creativity. But of course there is no pleasing one’s antagonists. When I am not accused of being a voyeur, I am accused of the “affectless gaze”.
